PDC NY & DC Local Group Webinar: Not One-Size-Fits-All: Rethinking Financial Planning for First-Gen & Diverse Lawyers

May 18 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm EDT

Summary:

Most financial advice assumes a standard starting point: generational support, minimal outside obligations, and a clear path to wealth-building.  However, many attorneys, particularly those who are first-generation, women, minorities, or LGBTQIA+, are operating from an entirely different reality.  They may be navigating student debt alongside family financial expectations, building wealth without ever seeing anyone in their immediate family do so successfully, or making career decisions influenced by pressures their peers simply don’t share.

This webinar is designed for those responsible for developing and retaining legal talent, going beyond surface-level mentorship.  Attendees will learn how to guide attorneys in building personalized financial strategies that reflect their actual circumstances—not one-size-fits-all assumptions.  Rather than focusing on general “financial wellness,” this session delivers practical tools to help leaders coach attorneys on how to think about money, financial decisions, and long-term planning in a way that works for them.  Attendees will leave with scripts and conversation starters that can be used immediately in mentoring relationships without needing to be a financial expert.  So too, attendees will walk away with readily implementable ways to help attorneys think through decisions like, “Should I aggressively pay down debt or invest?” “How do I support family without derailing my future?” and “What does ‘affording my life’ actually mean at my income level?”

Key Topics Covered:

  1. Different financial starting points and why they matter.
  2. First-generational wealth-building versus wealth preservation mindsets.
  3. Competing financial priorities: debt, family, lifestyle, investing.
  4. Cultural and identity-driven influences on financial decisions.
  5. Avoiding “default” financial paths that don’t serve the individual.
  6. Turing income into intentional strategy.
